This Woman's Work - Leni Ward
Biography

Leni Ward is an acoustic multi-instrumentalist heavily influenced by modern folk storytelling. She has been likened to various female performers, including Suzanne Vega, Ani Difranco, Toi Amos and Beth Orton.

A self-taught pianist, she rapidly excelled in her study of the acoustic guitar, beginning to write songs (most of which are featured on the album) on the instrument nine months after first picking up a guitar, and touring the UK as a solo artist nine months after that.

Frequently approached and rebooked by promoters, Leni balanced a full-time degree course with touring - on public transport.

"Right at the beginning, I wrote in a lot of different tunings. The prospect of several months' travelling on trains, coaches and buses with several guitars forced me to consider how to create the moods and sounds I wanted from the guitar in one or two tunings instead."

The album, recorded in a week in the midst of a hectic tour schedule, aims to mimic the atmospheres Leni was able to create live to great effect and reception.

"We recorded the guitar and vocals together, mostly, so you're really hearing the live sound in the tracks," Leni explains. "The whole recording experience was amazing - we were in this building that was so steeped in music history and I learned so much about the industry and production in just a few days there."

Leni is currently developing material for the second album and now plays a far more diverse range of instruments onstage - surrounding herself with up to six stringed and percussive instruments. She has been known to play several at the same time.
