It’s astonishing to me how truly talented Lex Land seems to be. At only 21, the Los Angeles-based artist has created an album of pure beauty; a fantastic mix of honey-sweet folk and dense, beat-driven folk-rock.

Land’s fantastic debut is Orange Days On Lemon Street, a title taken from her time spent in Orange, California. And within, you’ll find eleven songs, each remarkable in its delivery and composition. Her lyrics are refreshingly clever and poetic and her melodies are unforgettable.

Land makes melancholy sound beautiful, as when she sings on the breezy, yet stinging ‘My Fault, Your Mistake,’ a song where she dissects the relationship with her father: “We’ve both done each other so much wrong / I’ve made mistakes too big to fix / And maybe regardless of what I want, we just don’t mix.”

Other songs prove just as hypnotic. On ‘Easy,’ the music purrs and curls, pulling a listener in like ivy. And on ‘Sweet,’ a heavy drumbeat holds hands with Land’s sweet voice as she tells her listener, “I may seem impenetrably hard, but I can be soft too,” which could be the best way to describe Land.

For a debut this strong, there is little doubt that people will take notice of Land’s impressive talents. It seems many already have, as Orange Days On Lemon Street has been on iTunes’ most downloaded folk albums since the record’s release in late March.

Lex Land is scheduled to perform shows around the country with fellow songwriters, Joshua James and Justin Townes Earle. For a full list of upcoming dates, please visit her page at MySpace.

Womenfolk is proud to introduce the twenty-third in its This Woman’s Work series with the inclusion of the Lex Land.

You always highlight great musicians – if it wasn’t for your suggestions I would be missing out on all these great musicians. Lex really is a talented musician who deserves all the attention she can get.
